Tom Cruise in negotiations to play 'Tourist'

Remake of French spy thriller

NEW YORK -- Tom Cruise is in negotiations to play the title character in Spyglass Entertainment's remake of the French spy thriller "The Tourist."

Cruise has been considering the project for weeks as one of several potential drop next moves for the star, and is likely to be the succeeding project he tackles.

Bharat Nalluri will mastermind screenwriter Julian Fellowes' adaptation of the 2005 feature, which follows an American tourist secondhand as a pawn in a snoop game by a female Interpol federal agent. Canal Plus will make alongside Spyglass.

Cruise's career has been in a slump in late months undermentioned delays on the button of his Nazi-fighting biopic "Valykrie," and a slow-starting slate at his United Artists label. He was recently replaced by Angelina Jolie in the reconfigured drama "Edwin A. Salt," and is looking to revitalize his career by possibly starring in the Working Title comedy "Food Fight."

"Tourist" is a different project from the lately announced Warner Bros. pic based on a novel of the same advert, set to be produced and potentially star George Clooney.

CSNY Documentary Set For Summer Release

Neil Young [ tickets ]'s politically charged documentary film, "CSNY: Deja Vu," is expected to be released July 25 in the US, according to a press release. The documentary was filmed during Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young's "Freedom of Speech 2006" tour of North America. The tour featured music from Young's controversial "Living With War" CD--an album of protest songs written as a rebuke of President George W. Bush and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Songs from the controversial album are woven together on the new film with archival material, news footage, audience reactions and observations of the issues surrounding the integration of politics and art, according to a statement.A distribution deal is in the works that will make the film available on the big screen simultaneously with a video-on-demand release. In addition, Netflix will air the film on the "Watch Instantly" streaming service the same day. The band's label is expected to release a DVD version in the fall--prior to the presidential elections. HDNet is expected to air the film the day the DVD is released.

Indy has Spidey in its sights at box office

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Expectations management goes out the window when a picture is considered a candidate for one of the biggest openings of all time.

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" opens across North America at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, and industry observers already are talking about a five-day haul north of $150 million for the U.S. Memorial Day holiday weekend.

That would put "Skull" on course to surpass the "Spider-Man 3" opening of $151.1 million in May 2007 -- with a big asterisk, given that Spidey reached that level in three days.

"Skull" represents the iconic franchise's first new installment in 19 years. Its three predecessors posted domestic totals running from $209.6 million for franchise fountainhead "Raiders of the Lost Ark" in 1981 to $197.2 million for the second sequel, 1989's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," whose outsized foreign grosses helped "Crusade" outgross "Raiders" on a worldwide basis. The first sequel, 1984's "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," fell short of both other Indy flicks both domestically and internationally.

As is the norm with big "tentpole" releases these days, "Skull" will open roughly simultaneously in 61 foreign markets. And though early reviews have been mixed, the frenzy among even the jaded press contingent at Cannes for the film's world premiere Sunday makes it clear that word-of-mouth will be more vital to its theatrical performance than critical reaction.

Suffice it to say, distributor Paramount Pictures has a lot of positive energy going for it as "Skull" looks to write itself into box office record books.

New champ "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" earned $55.03 million domestically last weekend, according to final data issued Monday, and should do at least half that much through Monday. But the one-time notion that "Prince Caspian" would develop into a sequel phenomenon quickly faded. Industry observers had expected an opening in the $80 million range.

After two weekends at No. 1, "Iron Man" still played strongly in its third weekend, grossing $31.84 million to push its domestic total to $223.12 million.

Drea De Matteo - De Matteo Blames Joey For Career Hiatus

Actress DREA DE MATTEO reportedly blames her role in cancelled U.S. sitcom JOEY for ruining her career.

The former The Sopranos star signed up to play Matt Le Blanc's sister on the NBC show, after he continued his famed Friends character for the spin-off following the conclusion of the original hit series in 2004.

But the programme failed to win over Friends fans, and was scrapped by the U.S. network in 2006 after only two series.

And, according to New York gossip column Page Six, De Matteo regrets accepting a part in the doomed series - admitting she has been out of work since the show ended.

A source tells the publication, "She was saying Joey completely ruined her career. She called it horrible and said she hasn't been able to really work since then.

"She said she's really been out of the business and is trying to get back in."

Fashion wrap: Going country

There was no fringing in sight as the stars of country music took to the red carpet, but the night belonged to Nicole Kidman and her fashionably-clad baby bump.

Mrs Keith Urban wore a pale grey empire line dress which proved once and for all that she does indeed have a baby bump.

The pale colour and slicked back hair-do put all the focus firmly on her pregnancy.

Other stars who chose dresses with a distinctly Grecian theme included LeAnn Rimes, who opted for a flowing purple gown with a jewelled bodice, and Taylor Swift, who wore a stunning white halter neck dress.

Rock singer Sara Evans failed to rock in a white mini dress that resembled a tied sack.

Ditto model Karolina Kurkova, who wore a similar design which she managed to salvage with a few funky accessories.
